In thinking about what we do and what our customer expects from us, we tried to come up with a common thread that ties it all together. The title of this blog is the tag line that we landed on. It isn’t based on pretension or self-indulgence, but it certainly has to do with an appreciation for the differences between exceptional and ordinary. This applies to people, behaviors and personal style. I read something in British GQ recently that really struck a chord with me. It equated dressing well with good manners. I liked the sound of it because I’m probably a bit self-conscious about too much focus being put on fashion and luxury. What we’re trying to do is to make people look and feel their best, rather than to help someone spoil himself. So dressing well is more like holding the door or bathing regularly. Everyone appreciates thoughtfulness, but I think it’s also the case that people appreciate someone with a refined personal sense of style.

I think it’s safe to assume that special things matter quite a lot to our customer. He may own a unique automobile or have fine art hanging in his home. When it comes to their wardrobe, he knows what he likes and he’s interested in being stylish. He pays attention to the details and they seek out things and brands that suit him. Our customer isn’t a slave to fashion, but he evolves his look so that he is current and doesn’t look like he did ten years ago. He’s particular about the glasses and shoes he wears, maybe even the pen he carries. He likes good food and, probably, good wine. When he walks into a restaurant or into the office, other people notice him. He does all of this without affectation because all of this comes naturally to him. It’s certainly the case that every little detail doesn’t matter to everyone, but we treat everything we do as though it matters. We expect our customer to be very discriminating and we want him to rely on us to give him something exceptional.
