For The Love of Sweaters

We live in Colorado, which is famous for having warm, sunny fall weather. Last week, we were wearing Bermudas and polos, playing golf and riding bikes. This morning it was 27 degrees. It’s still nice during the day, but it is now officially sweater weather. This is good news for me because I love sweaters. Now that men dress more casually and wear suits and sport jackets less often, the sweater takes on a bit more importance. It adds both warmth and style to your wardrobe. It’s easy to take off when it gets warmer. I feel the same way when I add a stylish sweater to my outfit as I do when I put on a soft sport jacket, just a little more well-dressed and complete.

The world is full of great sweaters right now. A fine gauge Merino wool V-neck is timeless and flattering. Google images of Cary Grant. There are wool/cashmere blend sweatshirt styles in brighter colors that are great for jeans and chinos. Zip mocks have been strong for years because they’re stylish and very functional. There are densely knitted pullovers and zip sweater jackets that are even somewhat water resistant. In chunkier yarns, you’ll find cardigans, button mocks and shawl collar styles. Rustic tweed yarns give a new casual dimension to sweaters of all styles. Forget about Mr. Rogers, a classic fine gauge cardigan is a very sophisticated, urbane look.

So, it’s time to think about sweaters. The nice ones can be a little costly, I guess, but $150 to $300 will give you a lot of selection in finely made sweaters. Be glad you’re male. I don’t even want to know what my wife pays for her sweaters. Have fun this fall. Wear a new sweater to a football game or out to a casual dinner. You will feel and look better than the guys around you.
