Cool Stuff For Father’s Day

With all the cool technology around these days, I still enjoy well-made simple things. Here is a short list of a few that I use regularly that I am glad I have every time I use them.  These make outstanding Father’s Day gifts (in addition to our Scott Barber apparel, of course).

  1. A good weekend duffle. They are useful, handsome and timeless. Anything under eighteen inches in length is easy to carry and will hold a surprising amount of gear. This one is made by Filson of heavy waxed canvas and will likely outlast you.

  2. A classic pocket knife. Something between three and four inches when closed will fit nicely in your pocket. You don’t have to look around or use your fingernails when you need to open a box. I like one with a locking blade. I remember my first one that I was given by my dad on my sixth birthday. This is a stag handled Case Copperlock. It comes in two sizes, is very well-made and will set you back about the same as a nice lunch for two.

  3. Stemless wine glasses. I’m not a wine snob and certainly not a wine glass snob. It is, though, nice to drink wine from a good wine glass. I’m not talking about the $50 apiece variety. I like these stemless ones from Riedel. They’re harder to knock over or to break and they fit in the dishwasher.

  4. A classic comb. I just like the way this Kent model 12T looks and the medium scale of its teeth. Not much to get excited about, but it’s just about the way a men’s comb should be. Seven bucks.

  5. Ray-Ban aviators. I’ve worn these since college. I still have a pair that my dad wore as a military pilot a long time ago. They happen to be cool again, whatever that means. They never stopped being cool.

  6. Le Creuset Dutch oven. This might not seem like the most masculine item on my list, but it really is a great thing. They come in pretty cool colors and a few sizes. They work about like a crock pot, but you’ll look more like you actually know something if you make your pot roast in one of these. Indestructible. Also, a perfect wedding gift.

  7. A good hatchet. I admit that not everyone needs one of these. I saw one in a nice store in Steamboat Springs and couldn’t resist. We have a lot of trees and chopping off dead or low branches is more fun than you’d think. It makes you feel like you’re really doing something. This one is made by Gransfors Bruk in Sweden. For $125, I put it in the same category as a Winchester 1873 carbine or a 1940 Ford pickup.
